Hello and welcome to AstroReefer! My name is Sean, and this site is primarily for my personal enjoyment and to document my journey in the reef keeping hobby. What does personal enjoyment mean? I am not trying to make a business, sell product, or influence others. At the same time if information presented on this site help others on their own journey, enter the hobby, or start a conversation then I am truly grateful.

The name AstroReefer is a combination of two of my hobbies, Aquariums and Astrophotography. I started keeping aquariums when I was a kid in the 90’s, and as most do started in freshwater. I had the typical tropical setup with smaller 20 gallon tanks, HOB filter setups, and common fish such as tetra’s, barbs, angels, etc.

I had a few gaps in keeping aquariums as I moved between apartments in my 20’s, and did not get a “larger” aquarium until a few years ago with my 100 gallon African Cichlid tank. Even up till about 2021, I was afraid of saltwater due to many assumptions (some correct and some incorrect). Fears such as high cost, complexity and maintenance requirements prevented me from entering this fascinating side of aquariums until 2021. From that point I was hooked!

I now have 2 fresh water aquariums and 3 saltwater aquariums, with other tanks in storage in my garage as quarantine or other needs arise.
